The Earth is the Floorplan: How Landscape Design Can Restore Health, Belonging, and Connection

For decades, traditional development has treated the land as a blank surface—cleared, graded, built upon, and landscaped only after structures are complete. Through an emerging Living Human™ model, Michael explores how biophilic environmental design, shared outdoor rooms, edible landscapes, and deep connections to nature can intentionally spark everyday encounters and a lasting sense of belonging. The talk challenges landscape professionals to see their work not as the finishing layer of development, but as essential social infrastructure—creating places that support longer healthspans, encourage spontaneous human connection, and allow people and nature to thrive together. It is a practical and provocative call to move beyond landscaping as decoration and recognize environmental design as the true foundation of healthier, more resilient, and more deeply human communities.
