APLD Offers Online Educational Symposium “Slow the Burn”

In response to the devastating fires that raged throughout Los Angeles this winter, the Association of Professional Landscape Designers’ California chapter has made their Slow the Burn Symposium available virtually. Originally recorded in 2022, the virtual symposium which is comprised of five modules brings together a panel of designers and other experts to share knowledge on how to craft ecology-based landscapes that address pressing issues of biodiversity collapse, water scarcity, and wildfire threat.

According to the APLD, “This program is for all landscape professionals—from novice to seasoned—with residential and commercial projects (both new and renovated sites), and those near or within Wildland Urban (and suburban) Interface (WUI) Zones. It brings together leading experts who will present a compendium of research, experience, and ideas for design, implementation, and care of landscapes that work with fire ecology.”

Wildfire will continue to be a major concern for Angelinos for years to come, and continuing education on building fire-resilient landscapes is vital. After completing the online symposium, attendees will gain insights into the challenges, misconceptions, and groundbreaking research surrounding how to design and maintain landscapes that promote both safety and ecological balance.
